More women than men tend to buy computer bags, and women usually favor designer looks, said Charles Warren, a customer specialist at Best Buy in East Brainerd.

“If they’re going to carry around their laptops, they want to have a bag that doesn’t look like a computer bag,” he said.

Men are the opposite.

“Guys don’t care how the bags look,” he said. “They’re more concerned about protecting their devices.”

The question of how to carry a computer also comes down to demographics, although women of all ages want color and/or design included, Warren said.

Male and female students typically prefer to carry computers in backpacks, which often have compartments for storing notebooks, books and cell phones, he said.

Southeastern Louisiana University freshman Caytlin Daly, 19, requested a designer tote for Christmas.

Her mother, Angie Daly, perused eBay before purchasing what was actually a Gucci diaper bag. Its spacious dimensions make it perfect for carrying not only Caytlin’s computer, which she places in a sleeve before putting it in the bag, but her books as well.

“It really works great [as a computer bag], but I don’t tell people it is a diaper bag,” Caytlin said.

Angie Daly said both her and her daughter’s computer bags are black.

The new gaming netbook announced by the specialist gaming product manufacturer Razer is based on the Atom processor from Intel (NASDAQ:INTC).

Intel and AMD are likely to make announcements on their roadmaps at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in early January. Although we’ve no hard and fast details yet of exactly what the two companies are going to announce, it’s public knowledge that AMD is ahead on its production of Fusion chips, which essentially have both graphics processors and CPUs on one die. That’s very likely to give quite a performance jump, and AMD has publicly said that it has several vendors lined up to produce netbooks, notebooks and even tablets using the Fusion chips.

“There is, indeed, a decrease in the netbook frenzy evident just a couple of years ago,” said Dane Anderson, CEO and executive vice president of research at Springboard Research, in an e-mail interview with ZDNet Asia. He added that though netbooks will continue to hold a place in the market, their market share is eroding, especially with tablets gaining prominence.

On the flip side, Gerard Tan, regional commercial director of IT at Gfk Asia, does not think tablets will pose a challenge to the product category. In an e-mail interview, he said tablets are relatively more expensive than netbooks and do not have a full operating system under the hood. He also pointed out that a good portion of netbook customers continue to be students.

Jim McGregor, chief technology strategist at In-Stat, thinks netbooks will continue to hold sway with consumers due to their low price and functionality. In an e-mail interview, he said the educational sector and other segments still prefer portable computing devices with keyboards and will choose a netbook over a tablet.

The folks at NewPad have found a Chinese computer that also has a screen that flips back to let you convert from laptop to tablet mode, but it’s not exactly a Dell Duo clone, because the whole lid flips, not just the display.

This isn’t a completely new idea. In fact, the Chinese notebook looks more like a Vadem Clio than a Dell Inspiron Duo. But it’s been years since I’ve seen anyone use this distinctive design.

The new computer features an 8.9 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel capacitive touchscreen display, a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 120GB hard drive. It has a 3000mAh battery and runs Windows 7. There’s an SD card slot, Ethernet, VGA, USB and mic jacks, as well as a webcam and a series of buttons along the hinge that let you adjust the volume, toggle the WiFi, and perform other tasks quickly in tablet mode.

Launched last September 14, 2010, the Dell Inspiron Duo immediately caught the media attention. According to a blog review, the Inspiron Duo’s product demo– vertically rotating screen– was so impressive that the writer almost hit the ceiling when she first saw it. “It was like nothing we’d ever seen before,” as she puts it.

But of course the back-flipping swiveling 10.1 inch screen is not what it is all about. Inspiron Duo’s 1366×768-resolution display is partnered with an accelerometer, though interestingly not in the display itself. The accelerometer controls the screen orientation which means that when the screen is rotated, the viewing orientation doesn’t actually change until it is locked over the keyboard.

Since its release in 2008, Google’s Chrome web browser has become a serious competitor to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Mozilla’s Firefox. The new netbook-oriented Chrome OS is expected to be more like a web browser than other operating systems.

The new operating system is built on a cloud computing model that reduces the importance of local hardware by storing data and applications on remote servers. Chrome OS will not run applications directly, but rather will mediate between a computer’s user interface and cloud-based applications such as Google Docs, Gmail and Picasa.

Google has indicated that Chrome OS is will be released in late 2010. Netbook devices carrying the new operating system are expected to ship some time in 2011.
